Men's Tennis Finishes First Day At Penn State Invite

STATE COLLEGE, PA. - The NC State men's tennis team had multiple players begin competition in the Penn State Fall Classic Tournament in State College, Pa. on Friday, Sept. 12. The team members participated in both doubles and singles competion against players from Pepperdine and Princeton. Competition will continue throughout the day on Saturday, Sept. 13 before concluding on Sunday, Sept. 14.
Seniors Jay Weinacker and Christian Welte teamed up to take on Omar Altman and Mahmoud Kamel of Pepperdine, but fell 9-8(5). Senior Derek Stephens and freshman Jaime Pulgar fell to Alex Krueger-Wyman and George Carpeni (Princeton), 8-6, and junior Frideric Prandecki and sophomore Rob Lowe lost to Peter Capkovic and Alex Vuckovic of Princeton in a close match, 9-8(8). Redshirt freshman Julian Sullivan and sophomore David Chermak earned a win over Ryan Kim and Alex Faust (Princeton), 8-6.
The men's team had multiple successes in singles play on Friday as well. Weinacker won his first singles match of the fall season in the third set over Altman, 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, and Welte defeated Capkovic, 6-3, 6-3. Stephens fell to Kamel, 7-6, 6-1, and Krueger-Wyman took down Pulgar in the third set, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1. Lowe lost to Alejandro Moreno (Pepperdine), 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, and Prandecki fell to Carpeni, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Chermak battled Kim to the very end, and earned the win, 5-7, 7-5, 7-6(5), and Sullivan defeated Parker Preyer of Princeton, 6-4, 6-4.
