Junior tennis standout Jay Weinacker has been named the mideast region winner of the ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). Weinacker, from Birmingham, Ala., was recognized for his play on the court in addition to leadership and sportsmanship. Weinacker is now one of eight finalists for the national award.
The ITA/Arthur Ashe Award for Leadership and Sportsmanship goes to a player who has exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements.
Weinacker tied for the team lead in singles in 2008 with 18, and was named a 2008 All-ACC selection for his play. He also tied for the team-lead with a 7-4 mark in singles in the ACC, including a 6-3 record at No. 3 within the league and has a 22-11 career record all-time in ACC dual matches. He ranks third all-time in singles wins at NC State (85), and is just 10 off of the school record as a junior. Weinacker also holds the top-two spots in school history for single season spring wins, winning 23 in 2006 and 21 in 2007 and was instrumental in helping lead NC State to an Elite 8 appearance in 2007, the first such trip ever for the Wolfpack.
Off the courts, Weinacker is involved with the NC State Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and helped organize the recent concert to raise money for the Darfur Refuge Camp in Sudan.
In addition, he carries a 3.076 GPA in business management and has been named to the dean's list twice in his career.
