The NC State men's tennis team will send a singles player and a doubles tandem to the NCAA Tournament, May 21-26, in Tulsa, Okla. Sophomore James McGee will compete in the singles draw while senior Nick Cavaday and junior Jay Weinacker will compete in the doubles field.
"We are looking forward to the tournament and its a great opportunity for these guys," said head coach Jon Choboy. "We haven't had a singles player make the tournament in awhile and it shows the skill level of our team to have singles and doubles players qualify. We feel they have a legit chance to really do something special in the field."
McGee is the first NC State player to make the singles draw since ACC Player of the Year Roberto Braccone made the field twice in his career, the last time coming in 1999. McGee, currently ranked No. 48 nationally by the ITA, was unranked at the beginning of the spring season in January after not competing in the fall. He posted a 15-9 record in dual matches, including 14 wins at No. 1 singles. Even more impressive was his 7-4 mark at No. 1 in ACC play.
Cavaday and Weinacker teamed together in the fall of 2007, posting an 8-2 record including four wins at the ITA All-American Championship, and their success continued into the fall. Their national ranking peaked at No. 6 during the season, and ended at No. 28 after not playing together the last few matches of the season. They went 10-7 in the spring, all at No. 1 doubles.
