Rain Washes Out Softball at Elon

ELON, N.C. NC State was four outs away from being able to pick up its 20th win of the season on Thursday, April 3, but Mother Nature had other ideas. With one out in the top of the fifth, rain forced the first game of a planned twin bill at Elon to be cancelled. State was leading 4-1 when action was halted, and the Pack had tied the school record for doubles in a game with five.
Since five innings were not carried out the game and all statistics won’t stand.
State first scored in the top of the second. Kristine Bechtholdt reached and moved to second on a fly ball that was dropped in left. Claudia Cooper then laid a sac-bunt down, but Helterbran’s throw to first sailed high, allowing Bechtholdt to cross the plate.
The Pack used two doubles to right-center to add a second run in the top of the fourth. Bechtholdt drove the first pitch of the frame into the outfield grass, and Bridget Desbois tattooed another with two outs.
Elon got on the scoreboard with an RBI groundout from Caitlin McGowan in the bottom of the fourth.
Dj vu seemed to occur in the top of the fifth, as three more doubles again plated two runs for State. Shanna Smith, Mackenzie Mangum and Bechtholdt all belted two-baggers. The game was called while the inning was still being carried out.
Lindsay Campana allowed just three hits and one earned run in the circle for State. She picked up four K’s.
State will return to the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium in Raleigh this week for a three-game ACC affair with Georgia Tech. The Pack and Yellow Jackets will go head-to-head for two games on Saturday, April 5 beginning at 1 p.m., before wrapping up the series on Sunday, April 6 at 12 noon. Live stats will be available for all three games on GoPack.com. Live video streaming of Sunday’s bout will be available via ACCSelect.com.
