James McGee and Jay Weinacker each earned their first All-ACC honors as the NC State men's tennis team starts play at the ACC Championships today, in Altamonte Springs, Fla. McGee and Weinacker tied for the team lead with 7-4 singles marks in the ACC.
McGee, a sophomore from Dublin, Ireland, went 7-4 at No. 1 singles in league play and is currently ranked No. 56 nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
McGee beat four ranked players at No. 1 singles, including fellow All-ACC selections Cory Parr (Wake), Guilermo Gomez (GT), the ACC Rookie of the Year, and Alberto Larregola (VT). Three of his four losses in ACC play came at the hands of top-30 players, including No. 5 Daniel Vallverdu of Miami in three sets and against ACC Player of the Year - and the top-ranked player nationally - Somdev Devvarman of No. 1 Virginia. He posted a 14-8 record overall
McGee also posted a team-best 11-6 mark in doubles with partner Christian Welte, including 10 wins at No. 2 doubles. The duo had a number of ranked wins on the year, including an 8-6 triumph over #36 Rosenfeld/Subramanian of Miami on April 4. The duo was up a break on the nation's No. 1 duo, Devvarman/Huey of Virginia, on April 11, before falling 8-6 at No. 1 doubles in that dual match.
Weinacker, a junior from Birmingham, Ala., was 6-3 at No. 3 singles and
1-1 at No. 2 against ACC competition. He is currently ranked No. 114 nationally by the ITA in singles.
Weinacker has a career-record of 22-11 in ACC matches, after a 7-4 slate as a freshman and a 8-3 mark last season. His 83 career singles wins (fall and spring) ranks third all-time in school history. He needs just 12 to tie the all-time mark set last season by departed All-ACC selection William Noblitt.
In doubles, Weinacker teamed with senior Nick Cavaday to earn a current No. 20 ranking in doubles by the ITA. The duo was ranked as high as No.
6 this season, and have a record of 10-7 at No. 1 singles.
NC State is currently taking on No. 52 Georgia Tech at the ACC Tennis Championships.
