No. 52 Women's Tennis falls to No. 66 Virginia

Raleigh, N.C. - The No. 52 NC State women’s tennis team fell to conference foe Virginia 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the Curtis and Jacqueline Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. With the loss the Wolfpack falls to 7-4 on the year and Virginia improves to 6-5.
The match began as NC State narrowly lost the doubles point for only the second time this season. The first match to finish was at No. 2 doubles where the duo of Lenka Hojckova and Julia Roach lost 8-3 to Lindsey Pereira and Maggie Yahner. Daria Petrovic and Berkley Brock battled at No. 1 doubles to win 8-4 to tie the doubles matches at one apiece. The third and final doubles match saw the tandem of Jennifer Stevens and Hampton Williams jump out to a quick 6-1 lead for the Cavs but Kristen Bleakley and Catherine Grotz never gave up. They were able to win the next five games to tie the match at 6-6. The teams traded the next two games before Virginia took an 8-7 lead. The next game went into deuce but Stevens and Williams were able to break serve and take the match and the doubles point for their team.
The first match of the afternoon to be completed was at No. 4 singles where Lindsey Pereira was able to defeat Julia Roach to give the Cavaliers a 2-0 team lead. At No. 3 singles Maggie Yahner picked up a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Berkley Brock.
Hampton Williams clinched the victory as she defeated Catherine Grotz 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles. Lara Alexander handed Kristen Bleakley her second defeat of the season with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 5. Lenka Hojckova was able to win her first set against Jennifer Stevens but Stevens fought back and won the final two sets 6-1, 6-3.
The match of the day was the last match to finish as No. 124 Amanda Rales took on No. 112 Daria Petrovic. After exchanging the first two sets 6-2, the match had to be decided with a third set tiebreaker after the set was tied 6-6. Rales jumped out to an early 5-2 lead but Petrovic fought back to tie it at 6-6 but it wasn’t enough as Rales won the final two points to win the match.
The Red and White will return to action on Friday Mar. 14, at 2 pm as they host Richmond University at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
