CLEARWATER, Fla. NC State finally got back on the field with an 8-0 win in six innings over Maine on Friday, March 7, at the USF Under Armour Invitational. Allison Presnell led the Wolfpack offense, collecting three RBIs with a 2-for-4 performance at the plate.
The win moves State to 11-11 on the season, while Maine falls to 0-14.
Lindsay Campana (4-9) allowed just one hit in four innings of work en route to the decision. She struck out four and issued just one walk. Mendy McKenzie also gave up one hit in two innings of work, picking up four K’s of her own.
Jenna Balent (0-6) suffered the loss for Maine.
State jumped ahead quickly with three runs in the bottom of the first. Shanna Smith drew a leadoff walk on four pitches, and Alyssa Ishibashi got dotted with a Balent pitch. Lacey Holm later sent an RBI base hit through the left side, scoring Smith and putting runners on first and second. Presnell followed with a base hit into center, and bases loaded walks to Kristine Bechtholdt and Ashleigh Davis sent two more runs across the plate.
Palm Harbor, Fla. native and local celebrity Alyssa Allbritten gave her hometown fans something to cheer about with an RBI double to dead center in the bottom of the fourth.
The red and white manufactured another scratch in the bottom of the third. Bechtholdt walked and moved to third on consecutive sac-bunts from Lisa Nentwig and Davis. Blair Harkey then scored Bechtholdt with a double to left-center. Following a free pass to Smith, Maine lifted Balent in favor of hurler Cayleigh Montano, who induced an Ishibashi fly out to right to end the inning.
Head coach Lisa Navas made a litany of defensive adjustments at the onset of the fifth, putting McKenize in the circle, moving Allbritten to the DP spot, Presnell to first base and Claudia Cooper behind the plate in Nentwig’s lineup position. McKenzie racked up two K’s in her introductory frame.
Bridget Desbois made an appearance at third beginning in the top of the sixth, replacing Holm.
Presnell ended the game early with a three-run blast, her first of the season, down the left field line in the bottom of the sixth.
State returns to the field at 2:30 p.m. against tournament host South Florida.
