NC State women's tennis took out the College of Charleston, 6-1, on Monday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. NC State used a win early on in the doubles competition to stake an early lead and never look back. The Wolfpack (6-3), ranked No. 39 nationally by the ITA, won at the top-4 singles positions with three-set victories, including three matches after losing the opening set.
Julia Roach and Lenka Hojckova won at No. 1 doubles to open play with an 8-5 win. They improved to 7-1 on the season as a duo. Catherine Grotz and Kristen Bleakley won at No. 2 to clinch the doubles point and run their record to 5-1 on the season.
With the Pack up 1-0 in the match, Bleakley wasted little time in dispatching of Amanda Becker at No. 6, 6-3, 6-2, for a 2-0 Wolfpack lead.
CofC bounced right back with a win at No. 5 in straight sets to make things interesting and trip the Pack lead in half.
The Cougars won the first set at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 singles, but the Red and White showed no signs of folding. Daria Petrovic won her second set 6-0 before making it 3-1 with a 6-2 final set win.
Berkeley Brock and Roach both won their second sets, 6-1, before winning the final two sets in their matches. Roach's win at No. 4 sealed the win for NC State.
The Wolfpack women's tennis team will return to the courts for ACC play this Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday, March 8, NC State hosts Virginia Tech at noon before facing off with Virginia at 1 pm on Sunday, March 9.
