CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Two crucial errors and four unearned runs resulted in a 4-0 Wolfpack softball loss at Virginia on Saturday, March 29, in the first game of a twin bill. The defeat sends the Pack to 18-17 (2-5 ACC) on the year, while the Cavaliers climb to 10-22 (3-4 ACC).
Lindsay Campana (10-13) was handed the loss, despite not allowing a single earned run. She struck out 10, issued one walk and gave up six hits total. Karla Wilburn (6-9) grabbed the decision for UVa.
Claudia Cooper and Bridget Desbois laced back-to-back line singles into left in the top of the second, and Blair Harkey put runners on second and third with a sac-bunt in front of the plate. Both runners, however, were left stranded.
Campana came out blazing in the bottom of the second, fanning the side 1-2-3.
UVa had a tailor-made scoring opportunity in the bottom of the fourth, as Kelly Haller led off with a double to right-center and Jennifer Bowles took her place at second. Carly Winger then moved Bowles to third with a sac-bunt back to the circle, but Campana countered with K’s on Lindsey Preuss and Sarah Tacke.
The damage was done in the bottom of the fifth however, when the Cavaliers scored four unearned runs. UVa drew first blood when Alyssa Ishibashi booted a routine grounder to second from Meghan O’Leary with two outs, allowing Casey Steffan to score from second. Steffan originally took over on the basepath for Wilburn, who reached when Ashleigh Davis dropped a liner in left.
Virginia continued to pad its advantage in the inning with an RBI single from Winger and a two-RBI knock from Preuss.
