Softball Meets Cavaliers for Three in Charlottesville

RALEIGH, N.C. NC State will travel to Charlottesville, Va. this weekend, March 29-30, for a three game ACC series against Virginia. The Pack and Cavaliers will meet at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, before tying up play on Sunday at 12 noon. The stint marks the first road swing of the season for the red and white in conference action.
State leads the all-time series 8-6, having taken the last three games and seven of eight overall.
Last year’s series was an aberration of sorts, as all three contests were played on the same day due to weather issues. In the program’s five-year history, it’s the only time the squad has hit the diamond for three games, or an entire series for that matter, in a single day. Former All-American hurler Abbie Sims did her best to take care of business as quickly as possible, tossing a five-inning no-hitter in the third contest.
The Pack (18-6, 2-4 ACC) returns to league play after stepping outside the ACC threshold for a sweep of Winthrop in Raleigh this past Wednesday. Kristine Bechtholdt handed State a 2-0 win in the first game with an 11th inning walkoff homer. Mendy McKenzie kept the Eagles bats at bay in game two by tossing a brilliant perfect game, striking out 10. Lindsay Campana was solid in the circle as well, etching a career-best 14 K’s in game one.
2007 All-ACC performer Shanna Smith had three hits and three stolen bags in State’s two games against Winthrop, while Alyssa Allbritten continues to lead the Pack at the plate with an overall .316 batting clip and 18 RBIs.
UVa (9-22, 2-4 ACC) snatched one first-place vote in the ACC Preseason Poll, but was picked to finish seventh overall. The Cavaliers were stuck in a nine-game losing streak before snapping it with two wins over George Mason at home on Wednesday. Kelly Haller, a second-team all-conference selection a year ago, is batting .389, while Sarah Tacke has supplied 19 RBIs. Karla Wilburn (5-9, 5.14 ERA) has pitched 82.1 innings, and Whitney Holstun (2-6, 7.84 ERA) has tossed 70 frames worth of ball.
State will play two games at Elon next Thursday, April 3, before hosting a three-game ACC series against Georgia Tech at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium, April 5-6.
