RALEIGH, N.C. Kristine Bechtholdt thumped a two-run dinger in the bottom of the 11th, handing NC State a 2-0 victory over Winthrop in a two hour and 21 minute marathon at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on Wednesday, March 26.
Linsday Campana (10-12) struck out a career-best 14 batters, allowed just four hits and tossed 5.2 innings of no-hit ball while picking up the complete-game shutout. Her previous career high was 10 K’s against Tennessee Tech this past Feb. 23 at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic.
Izzy Trottier (1-2) took the loss in relief, pitching 3.1 innings. Megan Evans started in the circle for Winthrop, working seven innings and allowing four hits.
Shanna Smith and Alyssa Allbritten both picked up walks and pulled off a double-steal in the bottom of the first, but were left stranded at second and third.
Campana fanned six-straight, and seven of nine Eagles total, between the first and third innings.
Smith leveled the first hit of the game, a liner over Stephanie Reid’s head at short, in the bottom of the third. Ashleigh Davis followed with a bloop single that fell in behind third, but Smith was ruled out just beforehand by leaving first base early. Davis then stole second, but was left stranded.
Campana remained perfect until issuing a one-out free pass to Lenny Stoddart in the top of the fifth. Winthrop, however, failed to do anything with its first base runner of the game.
The Pack got one runner on in the bottom of the fifth, but that was it. Allison Presnell shot a base hit up the middle infield, and Blair Harkey moved her to second with a sac-bunt in front of the plate. But Smith flew out to center, ending the inning.
Harkey, arguably the best defensive center fielder in the Atlantic Coast Conference, made an unbelievable stab to keep Campana’s no-hit bid from evaporating in the top of the sixth. Carole Reda smoked a hard liner into left-center, and Harkey peddled backwards and made a leaping dive to secure the ball.
Two batters later however, Tessa Thomas spoiled the party with an infield single to short.
Allbritten roped a one-out double into left-center in the bottom of the sixth, but was left stranded.
The Eagles had base runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, but Campana struck out Jo-Lynn Smith to keep Winthrop empty handed.
Trottier took over in the circle for the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth, retiring the Pack in order.
Mackenzie Mangum and Lacey Holm drew consecutive two-out walks in the bottom of the ninth, but Alyssa Ishibashi grounded out back to the circle.
Some timely hitting turned the tide for the Wolfpack in the bottom of the 11th. Allbritten lined a single into center and Bechtholdt followed by tattooing her third long ball of the year, securing the Pack’s 17th victory of the season.
State will stay on the field to immediately take on Winthrop in game two.
