RALEIGH, N.C. NC State softball will host Winthrop for two games at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium tomorrow, Wednesday, March 26. The twin bill is slated to begin at 4 p.m., with game two following around 6 p.m. Live stats will be available on GoPack.com for both contests.
Thus far into the season the two programs have faced four common opponents; St. Joseph’s, Virginia Tech, Illinois State and Michigan. Both clubs beat St. Joseph’s.
The Pack (16-16, 2-4 ACC) steps out of conference play after hosting six-straight ACC games. Shanna Smith, a 2007 first-team All-ACC player, leads the Pack in hits with 29. Alyssa Allbritten has been the main offensive catalyst however, batting .311 with 17 RBIs, 12 doubles and three home runs. Allison Presnell’s 15 RBIs is second most on the roster.
Lindsay Campana and Mendy McKenzie both offered admirable showings this past weekend against Virginia Tech. Campana (9-12, 2.17 ERA) has won five of her last seven decisions, and is second in the conference for strikeouts with 116. McKenize posts a 7-4 clip with a 2.59 ERA.
Winthrop (17-11) will roll into Raleigh having won nine of its last 10 games. The Eagles split a doubleheader with Georgia Tech last Thursday in Rock Hill, S.C. 2007 All-Big South junior Lisa Kingsmore is batting .477 with a team-high 41 hits, while Mallory Hogan leads the club in RBIs with 23. Megan Evans has tossed 80.1 innings from the circle for Winthrop en route to an 8-4 record and a 1.46 ERA. Cari Wooldridge (8-6, 3.30 ERA) is also an option in the circle for the Eagles, having pitched 71 innings on the year.
Winthrop returns six starters and 13 total letterwinners from its 2007 edition, which won the Big South crown.
State and Winthrop have met twice previously, with the Pack taking both games on neutral fields. A year ago the Wolfpack topped the Eagles 3-2 at the Hampton Inn Crimson Classic in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Following Wednesday the Pack will return to work with a three-game set at Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., this weekend. The series begins on Saturday, March 29 with games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., with the closer coming on Sunday, March 30 at 12 noon.
