RALEIGH, N.C. For just the second time in program history, NC State (18-12) is participating in the postseason Women’s NIT announced late Monday night. The Wolfpack will receive a first-round bye, and will host the winner of the South Carolina-North Carolina A&T game.
The second round game will be held at Reynolds Coliseum on Monday, March 24 at 7 pm.
1975-76, Coach Kay Yow’s first season with NC State, was the last time the red and white took part in the postseason WNIT. In between stints, the Wolfpack has made 20 appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
Last season, NC State played in the preseason NIT and made it to the semifinals before bowing out to eventual champion Purdue on its home court in West Lafayette, Ind.
The WNIT awards an automatic berth to each of the nation’s 31 conferences. The spot goes to the team that finishes the highest in the regular-season conference standings that does not advance to the NCAA Tournament. If there is a tie, the WNIT abides by the conference tiebreaker. To be considered for WNIT selection, a team must have an overall record of .500 or better.
The remaining spots are filled by 17 at-large teams.
The 2008 Postseason WNIT will feature 16 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games and the championship game.
