RALEIGH, N.C. Mackenzie Mangum bashed a grand slam to lead NC State past Boston College, 8-0, in the first game of a doubleheader at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on Saturday, March 15. Lindsay Campana (8-10) picked up the win, allowing just three hits while collecting nine K’s. Allison Gage (4-9) took the loss.
State moves to 15-12 (1-0 ACC) with the decision, while the Eagles fall to 9-14 (0-1 ACC).
Campana and Gage were locked in a pitcher’s dual until the bottom of the fourth, when Mangum uncorked the Wolfpack’s offense. Allison Presnell drew a walk and took second on a passed ball, and Lacey Holm followed with a base hit up the middle. Alyssa Ishibashi then reached on a bunt to load the bases. That’s when head coach Lisa Navas summoned Mangum to pinch-hit for Lisa Nentwig.
Mangum made good on Navas’ decision, belting the first home run of her career, with the bases juiced no less, over the wall in right-center to put State up 4-0.
BC threatened in the top of the fifth, but failed to put a scratch on the board. Angela Pandolfo sent a double into the right-center gap, and Irene Delagrammatica followed with a base hit into left. But Campana fanned Nicole Troncoso, and induced a groundout back to the circle from Amy Tunstall to escape.
State ended the game early by scoring four runs with a two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. Bechtholdt belted a double down the line in left, and Lisa Nentwig brought her around with a base hit into right. Blair Harkey and Shanna Smith then belted back-to-back RBI doubles, moving the Pack’s lead to 7-0. Smith later scored the final run on a wild pitch.
NC State will stay on the field for game two against Boston College.
