3/1/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Tennis
Behind strong doubles play and dominating singles work, the No. 30 NC State men's tennis team wasted little time in dispatching the U.S. Naval Academy on Saturday morning at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The Wolfpack won 7-0 and improved to 6-3 on the season. The match was played outdoors at the Dail Outdoor Tennis Stadium, the first outdoor match of the spring season for the Pack.
The duo of David Rozek and Frideric Prandecki jumped out to a quick lead and won easily at No. 3 doubles, 8-2, to get the ball rolling for the Red and White.
Nick Cavaday and Jay Weinacker improved to 5-1 on the season in doubles with a 8-0 thrashing at the top spot in the doubles lineup to clinch the doubles point. The duo is ranked No. 9 nationally by the ITA.
James McGee and Christian Welte won at No. 2, 8-5, in the third doubles match.
Singles was more of the same for NC State, with impressive play on all courts. The last five singles spots each flew through their matches, allowing just 10 games combined and not dropping a set.
Freshman David Chermak improved to 2-0 on the season with another solid win, taking his match 6-1, 6-0 to put the Pack up 2-0 in the match.
The lone senior on the team, Cavaday, wasted little time in his match as well. He blanked Ramsey Lemaich at No. 3, 6-0, in the first set before finishing the match, 6-2.
Welte, a junior who is off to a strong start to the season, improved his team-best singles record to 8-1 with a win at No. 5. Welte improved to 5-0 at that spot in the lineup with a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Weinacker would finish his match moments later, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 2. The junior improved to 7-2 on the year and allowed just one game today in singles and doubles combined.
Stephens, a junior transfer, won his second match of the spring with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 4 to make the match 6-0 in favor of State.
McGee rallied from a set down to close the match, winning the second set, 6-2, after falling, 6-4, in the opener. He won the super tiebreaker, 10-6, to win his match and finish the 7-0 win.
NC State will return to these same courts on Sunday, Mar. 2 at 1 pm as it takes on No. 56 Indiana.
