TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Florida State escaped with a 57-54 victory over NC State Thursday night in ACC women’s basketball action from the Donald. L. Tucker Center.
FSU’s Tanae Davis-Cain, limited to just two first-half points, scored 15 points in the second half. At one point, she scored eight straight points and 13 of 15 over a stretch that gave Florida State the lead for good.
The game was tied nearly the entire second half until Davis-Cain began an 11-2 run to give the Seminoles a nine-point cushion. Jacinta Moore’s runner made it 49-40 with 3:39 to play.
Just when the game seemed out of reach, State’s Nikitta Gartrell buried a 3-pointer to make it 51-48 with 1:37 left. Just over a minute later, Amber White’s steal at mid-court and layup made it 53-52.
FSU (15-8, 5-3 ACC) secured the win with four free throws in the final 21 seconds.
Khadijah Whittington led NC State (14-9, 2-6 ACC) with 17 points. The Naismith Trophy candidate also moved into fifth place on the school’s block list with a pair.
Shayla Fields tossed in 13 points, while Gartrell had 11 points for the Wolfpack.
The offense wasn’t clicking on all cylinders in the early going, but the Pack maintained a steady effort on the defensive end. FSU was limited to only one bucket, a Courtney Ward 3 in the opening six minutes of play that allowed NC State to grab a 10-5 lead.
The Seminoles didn’t help themselves out from the free throw line either, missing six of eight from the stripe.
The lead narrowed to one but a Fields 3 put NC State up 13-9 with just under eight minutes until halftime, snapping a nearly seven-minute scoreless stretch.
FSU answered with a 9-0 run. Antionette Howard’s three-point play gave them an 18-13 lead.
Consecutive three-point plays by White and Whittington allowed the Pack to regain the lead, 22-18 with 2:44 left in the first half.
Although NC State shot a season low for a first half (23.3%) they still led 22-20 at the break.
NC State returns home to hosts the third-annual Hoops for Hope game on Sunday against Boston College. The game is televised on ESPN2.
