COLUMBUS, Ga. NC State fell in its first game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic to No. 18 Mississippi State, 4-0, on Friday, Feb. 29. The loss sends the Pack to 7-9 on the year, while the Bulldogs climb to 14-2. Lindsay Campana (3-7) suffered the defeat, while Kelsey Nurnberg (8-1) took the decision. Campana fanned seven while allowing two earned runs.
Mississippi State got on board immediately in the top of the first. Chelsea Bramlett reached on an error behind the plate, and quickly stole second before moving to third on a sac-bunt by Nakita Boyce. Bramlett later scored on a wild pitch from Campana.
The Pack put its first batter on base in the bottom of the first, but that was it. Shanna Smith drew a walk and moved to second on a sac-bunt from Ashleigh Davis, but Nurnberg struck out Alyssa Allbritten and Allison Presnell.
Campana picked up three k’s in the top of the second, making up for a few controls issues in the top of the first.
The Bulldogs added another scratch in the top of the fourth. Courtney Bures singled to left, and later scored when Allbritten’s throw to first on a sac-bunt from Ali Bainbridge sailed high.
State threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth, but couldn’t get it done. Blair Harkey beat out an infield single to third, then took to second on a Claudia Cooper sac-bunt. But Smith popped up to second, and Davis went down on strikes.
Mississippi State added two runs to its lead with three hits in the top of the sixth. Boyce singled up the middle, swiped second, and scored when Hayle Guess cracked a triple into the gap in right-center. Bures then scored Guess with a sac-fly to center.
