CHARLESTON, S.C. NC State topped Liberty, 2-1, at the College of Charleston’s Cougar Classic on Sunday, Feb. 24. Mendy McKenzie (4-2) picked up the victory while allowing four hits and fanning five batters. Sarah Ellis (0-1) took the loss for the Flames.
The red and white moves to 6-7 with the win, while Liberty falls to 1-2-1.
Shanna Smith scored twice, collected two stolen two bases, and added a base hit to front the Pack’s offense.
State secured its first run of the contest in the bottom of the third. Smith picked up a leadoff walk, swiped second, and took third on a sac-bunt from Ashleigh Davis. Smith later scored when Lacey Holm sent a grounder to second, which Cassie Hendrix bobbled, giving the Pack a 1-0 lead.
The Pack hit paydirt again in the bottom of the fifth. Smith reached first on an error at second, then moved up a bag on another sac-bunt from Davis. Smith then stole third, and crossed the plate when Allbritten sent a sac-fly to left.
The Flames certainly made things interesting in its last at-bat. McKenzie issued her first walk of the ballgame to Beth Bennett with one out, and it proved to be costly. J’nae Jefferson followed with a double into center during the next at-bat, bringing in a run and ending the shutout bid.
State will stay on the field to immediately take on Kennesaw State in its final game at the Cougar Classic.
