BOCA RATON, Fla. Unable to generate any offense, NC State fell to Miami (Ohio), 11-2, on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the FAU “Strike-Out” Cancer Tournament. State put together just three hits, while the Redhawks supplied 11.
The decision pushes State to 4-5 on the year, while Miami climbs to 1-2. Mendy McKenzie (2-2) took the loss while Meredith Linch (1-1) grabbed her first victory on the year.
Halle Popson drew a leadoff walk to begin the game, and Meghan Mann moved her to third with a double off of the wall in right field. Popson then crossed home plate to give the Redhawks an early 1-0 advantage when Christine Bills fouled out to Ashleigh Davis in left field.
The Wolfpack nearly found the plate in the bottom of the first. Shanna Smith walked and took second on a Lauren Peters sac-bunt. Smith then moved along to third on a wild pitch to Claudia Cooper, but Allison Presnell went down swinging to end the frame.
Miami padded its lead with six runs in an explosive top of the second, as Kimberly Williams and Breanna Robinson both nailed three-run home runs over the wall in left.
State found itself on the scoreboard in the top of the third after Peters tripled down the line in right and scored on a base hit from Cooper.
The Redhawks added an eighth run in the top of the fourth when Kathryn Russette placed an RBI base hit through the left side, scoring Popson.
Campana relieved McKenzie in the circle for the Pack to start the fifth. Miami, however, took advantage of two State errors to add three runs, all unearned, to its lead.
Alyssa Ishibashi knocked in a run with a base hit up the middle to add an extra scratch to the Pack’s final tally in the top of the fifth.
State will return to the field tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 17, for one last game at the tournament. As of press time, the starting time and opponent were yet to be determined.
