RALEIGH, N.C. NC State won in come-from-behind fashion Thursday night by holding Miami scoreless for over 10 minutes in the second half of a 51-45 ACC affair from Reynolds Coliseum.
Shayla Fields led NC State (16-9, 4-6 ACC) with a game-high 16 points, while Khadijah Whittington notched her 16th double-double of the year with 11 points and 12 rebounds. Nikitta Gartrell rounded out the balanced scoring attack with 10 points.
Maurita Reid paced Miami (9-16, 2-8 ACC) with 13 points.
With the game tied 33-all, Reid gave the Hurricanes a 35-33 lead with 16:12 to go. But that wound up being the last field goal for the visitors for over 10 minutes, allowing the Pack to go on a game-deciding 11-0 run that put them up 44-35 with 6:33 to play.
Lamese James finally put a halt to the Miami drought with a bucket at the 5:42 mark.
The Canes made it close in the late stages when Damisha Moore banked in a 3-pointer with 32.7 seconds left to make it 48-45. However, Fields and Whittington made three of four shots from the line to seal a second straight win for the once again pink wearing Wolfpack.
It was an 8-0 lead right from the start as Miami turned the ball over four times in the opening minutes of the game.
The Pack’s shooting was as good as its been all season during the first 10 minutes, converting 10 of its first 14 shots to take a 23-11 advantage with 10:24 left until intermission. Amber White made her first start of the season and fueled the strong start with eight quick points.
It became a tale of two extended runs by each team in the first half as the Pack went stone cold from the field, missing all but one of its final 12 shots over the last nine plus minutes. That gave Miami the opportunity to put together a 17-4 to take an unlikely 28-27 lead at the break.
Reid’s 3-ball with 2:21 on the clock gave Miami its first lead of the game. That lead stood up until midway through the second half when Fields buried a 3 of her own to swing the score back in the Wolfpack’s direction, 38-35.
The Pack improves to 8-0 all-time against the Hurricanes as the ACC’s leading-defensive team allowed less than 50 points for the third time in the last five games.
