NC State Notches Programs 700th Victory
NC State earned win No. 700 in program history Monday with a 76-38 win over Jacksonville State. The Wolfpack Women's basketball team has compiled an all-time record of 700-334 in 35 incredible years dating back to 1974-75.
Only North Carolina and Virginia have more wins than the Pack among schools in the ACC.
Coach Yow Misses Last Two Games
NC State's Hall of Fame head coach Kay Yow missed her second straight game Monday against Jacksonville State. She said her energy level is still not where it needs to be to complete all her coaching duties with the Wolfpack.
Yow missed the game at Columbia on Monday, Dec. 22, because she was feeling ill. It marked the first game she had missed since she took a 16-game leave of absence when a reoccurrence of breast cancer came about in November of 2006.
The following day a statement from Dr. Mark Graham was released:
Coach Kay Yow missed the NC State women's basketball game at Columbia on Monday, December 22, after a five-day road trip in the New York City area. She was on the bench Saturday, December 20 at Seton Hall. Coaching with metastatic breast cancer since late 2004, Coach Yow felt the more severe cold in New York City worsened symptoms that normally are more tolerable.
New Scoring Duo Emerges for the Pack
Senior Shayla Fields and junior Sharnise Beal have been two prime factors in the last two games - both victories for the Pack. Against Columbia the duo combined for 40 points (Beal had a career-high 26) in a 78-58 win over the Lions.
Monday the two had 34 combined points in a 76-38 win over Jacksonville State. Fields scored 21 points, while Beal added 13.
Since Beal came back six games ago after having shoulder surgery in the summer, the New Britain, Conn., native is averaging 11.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.5 steals and 1.2 blocks.
Gartrell Showing Her Versatility
Junior guard Nikitta Gartrell is the only player in the ACC that is averaging double figures in scoring (11.6 points), four rebounds (4.6) and four assists (4.0) per game.
Valuing the Basketball
NC State has done a nice job of limiting turnovers so far this season, currently tied with Wake Forest for the lead in the ACC and 32nd nationally with only 15.5 giveaways per game.
Wolfpack Finds Range From the Arc
After struggling mightily all season from three-point range, NC State connected on 10-of-26 shots (38.5%) from beyond the arc Monday against Jacksonville State. It was the first time the Pack has made 10 3's in a game since the Arizona game last November in Reynolds.
Fields Joins 1,000-Point Club
Shayla Fields became the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points against Ole Miss (12/14/08) with 17 points. Not bad considering she only scored three points during her freshman season.
She is the ACC's third leading scorer at 18.5 points per game and that ranks 28th in the NCAA.
NC State Scoring Chart
21. Ronnie Laughlin (1978-80) - 1,126
22. Ashley Key (2004-07) - 1,072
23. Shayla Fields (2006- ) - 1,053
24. Carisse Moody (2000-03) - 1,050
Game No. 1000 at NC State for Coach Yow
December 14 against Ole Miss, Coach Yow took her seat alongside Tennessee's Pat Summitt and former Texas' coach Jody Condradt as the only women's basketball coaches at the Division I level to coach 1,000 games at one institution.
Coach Yow is also just 15 wins away from 750 for her career, which only Summitt, Condradt, Vivian Stringer (Rutgers) and UNC's Sylvia Hatchell have accomplished.
Ironwomen Lead ACC in Minutes Played
Shayla Fields and Nikitta Gartrell rank first and second in minutes played this season in the ACC. Fields leads at 36.6 minutes per game as she has played the full 40 minutes seven times overall, while Gartrell is at 35.2 minutes and has gone the distance three times so far. See the next note - this is certainly nothing new for Fields.
