In the 15 years since The V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by ESPN and Jim Valvano, the foundation has raised more than $80 million. The organization has also awarded cancer research grants in 38 states and the District of Columbia. The V Foundation started with the dream of Valvano, the passionate and committed former NC State basketball coach and award-winning broadcaster, as he battled cancer. For more information, or to donate to the V Foundation, call 1-800-4-JimmyV or go here. Every cent of every donation goes directly to cancer research. Yow, in her 38th season as a college basketball coach, has battled breast cancer since she was diagnosed in 1987. Her last bout with cancer came during the 2006-07 season, when she took a two-month leave of absence and Mechelle Voepel wrote about Yow's fight. However, Yow came back for the third time and earned a win in her return over long-time rival Virginia. Yow then led NC State to its 11th Sweet 16 appearance.
Entering this season, Yow owned a career record of 729-337, making her only one of six women's basketball coaches with 700 or more career wins. She has been to 20 NCAA Tournaments, including 11 trips to the Sweet 16 and a trip to the Elite Eight and Final Four in 1998.
