NEW YORK Sharnise Beal scored a career-high 26 points to lead NC State to a 78-58 victory over Columbia Monday afternoon at Levien Gymnasium.
Tia Bell added 14 points for NC State (6-6). Shayla Fields tossed in a dozen with five assists.
Judie Lomax led Columbia (4-5) with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season.
The Wolfpack broke open a 10-point halftime contest by shooting over 62 percent in the second half that allowed for the red and white to enjoy a 20 point cushion for a majority of the stanza.
The lead grew to as many as 24 points after a free throw by Fields with 8:44 to go in the game.
Beal made her first start of the season and that decision paid off with 13 points in the first half as the Pack went into halftime up 30-20. The New Britain, Conn., native scored 11 early sending the Pack to a 20-12 advantage with 9:43 to go.
The Wolfpack’s defense was also strong from the get go, forcing Columbia to miss all but one of its first 14 shots.
The Lions snuck back into the game with the help of Lomax controlling the paint with seven offensive rebounds in the first half. Two straight buckets by the nation’s fourth-leading rebounder cut their deficit down to 24-18 with 3:52 left until intermission.
But the Pack put together a six-point spurt in the final minute of the first half to send them into intermission with a 10-point advantage.
Hall of Fame head coach Kay Yow did not feel well today and was not on the bench for the Wolfpack. It marked the first game she has missed since she took a 16-game leave of absence during the 2006-07 season when a reoccurrence of breast cancer came about in November of 2006.
“It was not one of her better days and she would have been here for the game if she could have,” said associate head coach Stephanie Glance, who filled in like she has in the past for Yow.
NC State is back in action Monday, December 29 against Jacksonville State at 1 p.m. from Reynolds Coliseum.
