NEWARK, N.J. Seton Hall squeezed past NC State, 71-65, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women’s basketball tilt from the Prudential Center.
Shayla Fields led NC State (5-6) with a game-high 20 points. Nikitta Gartrell added 14 points and Sharnise Beal and Bonae Holston came off the bench to contribute 12 and 11 points respectively.
Noteisha Womack, the nation’s leading rebounder, piled up her sixth straight double-double with 18 boards and 12 points, while Ebonie Williams and Nicole Emery had 19 and 11 respectively.
Though the temperature outside was well below freezing, both teams got off to a hot start today. By the 14:58 mark of the opening half Seton Hall held a slim 14-11 advantage with both teams running an efficient offense.
Later into the first half the shooting slowed down, but the Hall maintained its lead and just before the midpoint of the half they led 18-11 with Emery leading the way with six points.
Sandwiched between a pair of three’s by the Pirates, Fields was dead on from beyond the arc as well to keep the Pack within an arms length. However, a third straight Seton Hall three put the home team back up 27-18 at the 8:48 mark.
The Wolfpack were able to get within five points on three occasions, but seven straight points by the Hall’s Williams and a running bank shot just before the horn by Shantel Brown gave the Pirates a 40-28 advantage at the half.
Seton Hall opened its lead to as many as 16, 46-30, in the opening minutes of the second half - forcing NC State to use a timeout to regroup and the Pack responded with an 11-3 run to get within 49-41 after a conventional three-point play by Holston with 13:02 to go.
The defensive effort stayed strong for the Pack by limiting Seton Hall’s second chances. On the other end, a wide-open jumper from Gartrell made it 53-49 with 8:21 left and the momentum was starting to shift to the visiting team.
The Hall did hang tough down the stretch. A layup by Womack put them up 64-54 at the 4:48 mark, but NC State refused to quite and trimmed the deficit back down to four on two occasions in the final minute, including a turnaround jumper by Beal with 18.6 seconds left, but the Pirates snuck away with their fourth straight win and improved to 8-1 on the year.
Fields passed Angela Day (1,011) for 24th on the all-time scoring list with 1,020 career points.
NC State continues its trip through the New York City area on Monday at Columbia at 12:30 p.m. That contest is the first for the Wolfpack in the state of New York since the 1987-88 season.
