Recent Trips to New York City Area
It's no secret that one of Coach Yow's favorite places to travel during the Christmas holiday is to the New York City area. This weekend marks the first trip for the Wolfpack since the 2004-05 season when the club took part in the Saint Peter's Classic in Jersey City, N.J. Here is a snapshot of recent games played by NC State in the greater-NYC area.
12/30/04 W 70-61 at Saint Peter's
12/29/04 W 83-45 vs. Mount St. Mary's
12/21/02 W 71-61 at Seton Hall
Long Awaited Return to the Empire State
The Wolfpack women haven't played a game in the state of New York since opening the 1987-88 season at the Iona Invitational in New Rochelle, N.Y., located about 20 mile North of Manhattan. The Pack won its two games to begin the season over Canisius and Iona.
Valuing the Basketball
NC State has done a nice job of limiting turnovers so far this season, currently ranking second in the ACC and 43rd nationally with only 16 giveaways per game.
No. 1000 at NC State for Coach Yow
Last Sunday against Ole Miss, Coach Yow took her seat alongside Tennessee's Pat Summitt and former Texas' coach Jody Condradt as the only women's basketball coaches at the Division I level to coach 1,000 games at one institution. Coach Yow is also 16 wins away from 750 for her career, which only Summitt, Condradt, Vivian Stringer (Rutgers) and UNC's Sylvia Hatchell have accomplished.
Fields Joins 1,000-Point Club
Shayla Fields became the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points last Sunday against Ole Miss with 17 points. Not bad considering she only scored three points during her freshman season. She is the ACC's third leading scorer at 18.7 points per game and that ranks 33rd in the NCAA.
Dec. 29th Game Moved to a 1 p.m. Start
The NC State women’s basketball game time for Monday, Dec. 29, has been moved up one hour to a 1 p.m. tip time against Jacksonville State in Reynolds Coliseum. This game falls on the same day the football team takes on Rutgers in the Papajohns.com Bowl at 3 p.m., in Birmingham, Ala. The athletic department felt it was in the best interest to accommodate our fans that wish to stay for the basketball game and then catch the football game later that afternoon.
Fields, Gartrell Lead ACC in Minutes Played
Shayla Fields and Nikitta Gartrell rank first and second in minutes played this season in the ACC. Fields narrowly leads at 36.7 minutes per game as she has played the full 40 minutes six times overall, while Gartrell is at 36.1 minutes and has gone the distance three times so far. See the next note - this is certainly nothing new for Fields.
Shayla Fields Forever
After leading the ACC in minutes played last season, senior Shayla Fields has picked up where she left off last season - leading the conference at 36.7 minutes per game. She has played all but 33 minutes so far in 10 games this season and had a stretch of 212 straight minutes snapped against Ole Miss on Dec. 14.
Steady Free Throw Shooting
NC State is fourth in the ACC in free throw shooting at 71.9 percent (105-for-146). The Pack has shot better than 75.0 percent in seven of the 10 games so far this season. Nikitta Gartrell ranks 11th in the league at 76.9 percent (20-for-26). None of the eight player that have attempted a free throw this season is shooting less than 64.3 percent.
