MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. Tia Bell and Shayla Fields each scored 18 points for NC State in a 73-63 win over American in the consolation game of the Subway Classic hosted by the University of Minnesota at Williams Arena.
Junior forward Lucy Ellison notched her first career double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Nikitta Gartrell tossed in 11 points for NC State (4-1).
Michelle Kirk paced three American (3-2) double figure scorers with 16. Liz Leer (13 points) and Nicole Ryan combined for 25 points off the Eagles’ bench.
Certainly upset over yesterday’s stunning loss to Yale, the Wolfpack came out crisp and efficient on offense by making nine of its first 12 shots to take an 18-3 lead at the 12:47 mark.
American was set on shooting the three-pointer in the early going and that got them behind early by missing five of its first six from beyond the arc.
The lead grew to 17 points, before the Eagles went on an 18-5 run to get within four, 25-21 with just over five minutes to go until halftime. This time the three-pointer helped them as they canned four in that spurt to get within arms reach of the Pack.
But just as quickly as American made it a game, NC State closed the first half on a 13-1 run to take a 16-point, 38-22 lead into intermission. In all the Pack shot 60.0 percent in the opening 20 minutes.
American would methodically get back into the game in the second half as the Pack’s offense stalled out coming out of the locker room. The lead was whittled to single digits by the 15:50 mark, but a three-pointer by NC State’s Kristy Kenney pushed the lead back to 13, 47-34.
In the late stages of the game, American made it a one-possession contest for the first time since the opening minutes on a three-ball by Ryan with 3:23 left.
Today though, the Pack wasn’t letting this one slip away by converting 10-of-12 from the free throw line in the final minutes to seal the victory and alleviate some of the sting from the setback to Yale.
Bell’s 18 points was a career high, topping the 17 she scored against Elon on Tuesday.
NC State will hit the road again next weekend during the Thanksgiving holiday for a tournament hosted by Florida International in Miami. The Pack will take on the host Panthers Friday at 6 p.m., and No. 20 Auburn on Saturday at 6 p.m.
