MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. NC State’s trip to Minnesota got off to a sour beginning with a stunning 65-61 loss to Yale in the first game of the Subway Classic at Williams Arena.
Shayla Fields led NC State (3-1) with 18 points, while Nikitta Gartrell and Tia Bell had 15 and 10 points respectively.
Melissa Colborne paced Yale (2-1) to its first-ever win over an ACC club with a game-high 19 points. Jamie Van Horne had 15 points, while Yoyo Greenfield added 10.
The Wolfpack began the second half up 34-30 and added to its lead with buckets by Fields and Gartrell to take a 38-30 lead with 18:33 to go and everything seemed to be clicking for the Pack.
But the offense went completely away for the red and white. A Gartrell jumper at 14:57 accounted for the only points NC State could muster in an eight minute stretch that allowed Yale to take an improbable 48-40 lead.
The Bulldogs went up by 11, 57-46, and that finally seemed to wake up the Pack’s offense as they ran off 10 straight points to make it a one point game, 57-56, with just over four minutes to go.
Fields, hampered with foul trouble most of the day, scored eight crucial points in the second half to tie the game up at 58-all with 2:23 to go. But the Pack was never able to take back the lead when Colborne made two free throws for the Bulldogs and they held on for the win.
The Pack took a 10-point lead in the first half after a Bell hoop with 5:29 left until halftime. However, Yale clawed back to make it just a 34-30 game at intermission.
NC State will take on either American or Minnesota on Sunday at noon eastern time.
