Stephens, Welte Advance at ITA All-American

TULSA, Okla. - Seniors Derek Stephens and Christian Welte both won two singles matches to advance to the final round of the prequalifying singles in the D'Novo/ITA All-American Championships on Saturday, Oct. 4 in Tulsa, Okla. Stephens and Welte will compete in their third match of the tournament on Sunday, Oct. 5, and if they win, they will advance to the qualifying round.
Stephens defeated Austin Klores (Texas A&M) after falling in the first set, but battling back to tak the match 2-6, 7-5, 6-2. He then won his second match of the day over Bryan Swartz of Tennessee, 6-1, 6-1. Stephens will face Joey Burkhardt of Florida tomorrow.
Welte overpowered Phil Orno of Cleveland State, 6-4, 6-2. He then took down Oleksandr Kotsuik (Oral Roberts), 4-5, ret. Welte will take on Kiryl Harbatsuik of Sacramento State on Sunday.
Sophomore David Chermak also competed, winning his first round match over HOlden Ching (Sacramento State), 6-3, 6-1. However, after winning the first set, he was defeated by Emanuel Birghiu (TCU), 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Freshman Jaime Pulgar took down Hugo Vidal (Southern Illinois), 7-6(3), 6-2, in the first round, but then fell to Collin Hoover (Texas A&M), 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
