GREENSBORO, N.C. The annual Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Basketball Media Day was conducted Wednesday at the Grandover Resort. NC State was selected eighth in the 2008-09 ACC preseason poll.
Coach Yow and Shayla Fields addressed a gathering of local, regional and national media members on the upcoming season that began with last Friday's first official practice. Coach Yow says she's feeling better after spending a few days in the hospital.
NC State's Hall of Fame coach said she was hospitalized because of a change in her cancer treatment.
Yow says it started after a round of chemotherapy about three weeks ago when ``my body just couldn't handle that combination of drugs.''
She checked into a hospital Oct. 8, the same day her players left campus for fall break. She was released the following Monday, coached the Wolfpack last Friday and hasn't missed a practice.
Yow was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987, and said she feels her best during basketball season because ``I have tunnel vision and I forget everything else about my body.''

Together with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund, and The V Foundation for Cancer Research, the ACC and City of Greensboro announce the dates for The Classic, which will be held on Sunday and Monday, September 13-14, 2009, at the Grandover Resort and Conference Center in Greensboro, North Carolina. All proceeds of The Classic directly benefit the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund.
"I was excited with the amount of support and participation we had in year one of the tournament," said former Texas Tech head women’s basketball coach and Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund President Marsha Sharp. "Kay (Yow)’s vision is two-fold raising money and awareness for the cancer fund as well as gathering coaches from around the country for a cause that is far greater than any competition on the court. This tournament ignites the passion in the participating coaches and I am excited about heading to Greensboro and the heart of ACC land, in the place that Kay has experienced so much success.”
“Greensboro has earned the reputation of being the very best tournament host city for women’s basketball,” ACC Associate Commissioner Nora Lynn Finch stated. “With the FORE! 4Kay Golf Classic coming to Greensboro next September, we will have the opportunity to earn the reputation as being the best host city for golf, too! Everyone associated with the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament welcomes men’s and women’s basketball coaches and fans from across the country to Grandover for a golf classic that will help enrich Coach Yow’s legacy as a great humanitarian, visionary, and generous community leader.“
Among the well-known coaches and supporters who participated in the Inaugural Classic, which was held at the Cowboys Golf Club in Dallas, Texas on September 8, were Geno Auriemma (Connecticut), Jody Conradt (formerly at Texas), Bill Self (Kansas), Tubby Smith (Minnesota), Pat Summitt (Tennessee), Nick Valvano (The V Foundation), Nancy Lieberman (Broadcaster), and Debbie Antonelli (Broadcaster).
