CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. Stefanie Murphy scored 21 points to lead Boston College to a narrow 60-59 win over NC State Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for the Wolfpack.
NC State (12-4, 0-1 ACC) trailed 60-56 with under 10 seconds to play when Sharnise Beal drilled a 3-pointer off an inbounds pass to make it 60-59 with seven seconds left.
After Beal intentionally fouled Jaclyn Thoman, she preceded to miss the front end of a one-and-one attempt that gave the Pack one last chance. A fast paced attack left the ball in the hands of Shayla Fields, who came up just short as her five-foot jumper caromed off the side iron.
Fields led the Wolfpack with 16 points, while Khadijah Whittington and Sharnise Beal each added 13 points for the Pack. Whittington also hauled in 10 boards for her 12th double-double of the year.
Boston College (13-3, 2-0 ACC) got 11 points off the bench from both Mickel Picco and Rebecca Miles.
NC State opened up the second half with a 7-0 run and appeared to be in position to escape with a win. Beal was a big lift for NC State in the second half with three early baskets for a 45-36 advantage with 12:50 to play.
BC chipped away at its deficit and a conventional three-point play by Rebecca Miles got the home team within two, 50-48 with 6:30 to go. A minute later the Eagles squared things up 50-50 on a Picco layup.
After Picco missed a 3-pointer that would have given BC its first lead of the second half, Beal again came up with a jumper from the wing and Whittington drove the lane on the next possession to give NC State a 54-50 lead with 3:36 remaining in regulation.
After BC tied things at 54-54, Whittington and Murphy, the ACC’s two-leading scorers, traded baskets and it was 56-56 with 1:27 left.
Brittanny Johnson then came up with the play of the game for the Eagles with a running jumper that put them up for good, 58-56 with 37 seconds left on the clock.
The first half was basically a two-person dual between Fields and Murphy that resulted in back-and-forth action that featured 13 lead changes and seven ties.
From the outset, Fields and Chanita Jordan, making her first collegiate start in place of the injured Lucy Ellison, paced the Wolfpack with 18 of the teams first 23 points, with six early points coming from the 6-5 Jordan.
Fields buried 7-of-8 attempts from the foul line and canned three other buckets for 14 first-half points. The Wolfpack took advantage of 13 BC turnovers and turned them into 17 points.
Murphy, the ACC’s second-leading scorer behind Whittington, didn’t make her first basket until the 8:51 mark, but that sparked the freshman sensation to scoring 12 of the Eagles’ final 15 points of the half. However, the Pack still took a 32-31 advantage into halftime with Whittington only scoring two points.
