Coach Yow Misses Last Three Games
NC State's Hall of Fame head coach Kay Yow missed her third straight game Wednesday against Georgetown as her energy level is still not where it needs to be to complete all her coaching duties with the Wolfpack. Yow has also been absent from the Columbia game on Monday, Dec. 22, and the game with Jacksonville State on Mon., Dec. 29.
Beal - A Scoring Machine The Last Three Games
Junior guard Sharnise Beal is averaging 20.7 points over the last three games - all victories for the Pack. She is shooting 54.3 percent from the floor and is averaging 3.3 assists and 3.3 steals in the three games. She began this scoring spree with a career-high 26 points in her first start of the season at Columbia on Dec. 22. She has since followed that up 13 points against Jacksonville State and then 23 points last time out against Georgetown.
New Scoring Duo Emerges for the Pack
Senior Shayla Fields has joined forces with Beal to give NC State a formidable one-two scoring punch. Against Columbia the combo combined for 40 points (Beal had a career-high 26) in a 78-58 win over the Lions. Against Jacksonville State the two had 34 combined points in a 76-38 win over Jacksonville State. Fields scored 21 points, while Beal added 13. And last time out against Georgetown the dynamic duo had 36 combined points (Beal 23, Fields 13) in a 61-58 win on Wednesday.
NC State Has Not Trailed Last Three Games
NC State has led wire-to-wire in each of the last three games in wins over Columbia, Jacksonville State and Georgetown.
NC State Notches Programs 700th Victory
NC State earned win No. 700 in program history Monday with a 76-38 win over Jacksonville State. The Wolfpack Women's basketball team has compiled an all-time record of 701-334 in 35 incredible years dating back to 1974-75. Only North Carolina and Virginia have more wins than the Pack among schools in the ACC.
Valuing the Basketball
Although NC State tied a season-high with 22 turnovers Wednesday against Georgetown, the club has done a nice job of limiting turnovers so far this season and rank among the ACC leaders with just 16.1 turnovers per game.
Fields Joins 1,000-Point Club
Shayla Fields became the 25th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points against Ole Miss (12/14/08) with 17 points. Not bad considering she only scored three points during her freshman season. She is the ACC's third leading scorer at 18.1 points per game and that ranks 28th in the NCAA.
NC State Scoring Chart
21. Ronnie Laughlin (1978-80) 1,126
22. Ashley Key (2004-07) 1,072
23. Shayla Fields (2006- ) 1,066
24. Carisse Moody (2000-03) 1,050
Game No. 1000 at NC State for Coach Yow
December 14 against Ole Miss, Coach Yow took her seat alongside Tennessee's Pat Summitt and former Texas' coach Jody Condradt as the only women's basketball coaches at the Division I level to coach 1,000 games at one institution. Coach Yow is also just 13 wins away from 750 for her career, which only Summitt, Condradt, Vivian Stringer (Rutgers) and UNC's Sylvia Hatchell have accomplished.
Ironwomen Lead ACC in Minutes Played
Shayla Fields and Nikitta Gartrell rank first and second in minutes played this season in the ACC. Fields leads at 36.9 minutes per game as she has played the full 40 minutes eight times overall, while Gartrell is at 34.9 minutes and has gone the distance three times so far. See the next note - this is certainly nothing new for Fields.
Free Throw Shooting a Total Team Effort
NC State is second in the ACC in free throw shooting at 70.6 percent (156-for-221), but has no player qualify in the top-20 within the ACC. The Pack has shot better than 70.0 percent in 10 of the 14 games so far this season and has only one player shooting less than 60.0 percent.
