RALEIGH, N.C. NC State finds itself in much better position within the ACC after a pair of league wins this weekend at Reynolds Coliseum. Sunday’s victim, Wake Forest, went scoreless the first eight minutes of the second half allowing the Wolfpack to seize control in a 63-38 one-sided affair.
Khadijah Whittington and Megan Zullo each tossed in a game-high 12 points for NC State (14-7, 2-4 ACC). Whittington also hauled in 10 rebounds for her ACC-topping 15th double-double. The Pack also got nine points from Shayla Fields and Chanita Jordan and eight from Nikitta Gartrell.
Mekia Valentine came off the bench to pace Wake Forest (13-9, 0-8 ACC) with 11 points. Alex Tchangoue added seven points.
Jordan and freshman forward Gloria Brown were very effective in the first half, combining for 13 points. A 3-point play by Jordan put the Pack ahead 27-10 with 4:16 left until halftime.
Wake closed the half on a 10-2 run to get within arms length, but stilled trailed 29-20.
Sharnise Beal practically sealed the Pack’s win by scoring seven straight points in a 16-0 run to open the half. By the time Corinne Groves tossed in a short jumper at the 12:01 mark, the Demon Deacons were down 45-22 and never threatened the rest of the way.
Zullo got it rolling form beyond the arc in the second half with three 3’s to snap out of a slump that limited her to just 4-of-24 shooting from distance over the last six games.
“Repetition is also key for me when I am shooting,” explained Zullo. “You have to shoot with confidence no matter if they’re going in or not. Today, I knew the defense was paying a lot of attention to the post so I had good looks.”
Solid defense and taking care of the ball on offense was the recipe for success this weekend for NC State. The Pack allowed only 50 points on Friday to Virginia Tech and held Wake to an ACC-low 38 today.
And the red and white only turned the ball over a combined 19 times this weekend today it was a season-low of nine.
A 17-0 advantage in points off turnovers never hurts either.
“We knew this was a key weekend for us after not getting off to the kind of start we would have liked within the league,” said NC State head coach Kay Yow. “We now have to go out and try and come up with a couple wins on the road, which is never easy in the ACC!”
The tireless Fields also saw her consecutive minutes played streak come to an end at 245 when she took a seat with 2:13 remaining. She had played every minute in league play.
NC State hits the road for the first of two consecutive ACC away games. The first comes Friday at Virginia at 7 pm for John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
