The No. 20 NC State men's tennis team opened the 2008 season with a strong 6-1 win over the visiting High Point Panthers (0-1) Saturday morning. The match, the first of a triple header for the Wolfpack (1-0), saw NC State jump out to an early 1-0 lead in the match after getting strong doubles play from the top two spots in the lineup.
Jay Weinacker and James McGee wasted little time in renewing their chemistry on the doubles court with a strong 8-2 win at No. 1 doubles. The pair was 15-7 as a tandem in 2007.
At No. 2 doubles, Nick Cavaday and Rob Lowe easily dispatched Antraygues and Deloume of High Point, 8-1, to secure the doubles point for the Pack.
The Pack was sparked by a pair of freshmen and typical strong performances from Weinacker and McGee.
Newcomver Eric Turner was the first to win as his straight set, 6-4, 6-4 win over Max Dutois at No. 4 gave NC State a 2-0 lead.
Weinacker would finish his match at No. 1 a few minutes later after pulling out a 7-5 win in the second set. Weinacker wheeled off three straight games with the first set tied 3-3 to take the opening frame, 6-3.
McGee needed three sets to take out his opponent, Julien Artraygues, at No. 2, but was strong throughout the match. He took the first set with a commanding 6-0 win, then lost the second in a close tiebreaker, 7-6(6). McGee was in control throughout the first set and won, 6-4, to give NC State a 3-0 lead.
Welte would battle back to win a three-set match of his own, downing Henri Mangin, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to clinch the team victory.
With the teamoutcome no longer in doubt, David Rozek retired at No. 6 after a nagging injury forced an early exit, despite leading 7-5, 1-0 when he withdrew.
Rob Lowe would close off the match with a win at No. 5. Utilizing a big serve, the freshman won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4 over Ben Deloume.
NC State faces Davidson at 2:30 pm and then finishes its long day with a 6:00 pm match against UNC Greensboro.
