Host Notre Dame placed two runners in the top 10 and brought in its top five runners in the top 34 Friday to take a close decision over NC State at the 2007 Notre Dame Invitational.
The 12th-ranked Irish won with a team score of 92 points, 14 ahead of the ninth-ranked Wolfpack, which had 106. Redshirt-senior Wesley Smith led the way for NC State with an eighth-place individual finish at 24:08, and the Wolfpack’s top five runners all finished in the top 32, but the Pack did not run quite as well at the front of the race as the Irish.
Notre Dame had two runners in the top 10 and three in the top 16. NC State’s second and third runners, redshirt-junior Gavin Coombs and redshirt-sophomore John Martinez, finished 20th and 21st, respectively, at 23:23. Providence College, ranked 14th nationally, finished third with 124 points, followed by 25th-ranked Michigan (138 points) and 24th-ranked Florida State (147).
The margin between the Irish and Wolfpack was a thin one. Notre Dame’s Patrick Smyth finished second and Jake Watson finished 10th to give the Irish two runners in the top 10. With both teams tightly bunched in the top 35 individuals, NC State was unable to overcome Notre Dame’s strong showing at the front of the race. Coombs and Martinez were just four seconds behind the Irish’s Dan Jackson, who was 16th. Redshirt-senior John Crews was 25th at 24:26, with Stephen Furst 32nd at 24:36.
On the women’s side, junior Brittany Tinsley and senior Angelina Blackmon finished 11th and 13th, respectively, and sophomore Bona Jones was 21st, but NC State was unable to get significant contributions beyond its big three and finished seventh in the team standings with 221 points. Rice, unranked in the latest national poll, was the surprise winner in the women’s race with a score of 118 points. Seventh-ranked Illinois was second with 139 points, No. 12 Florida State was third with 141, and No. 2 Michigan was fourth with 148. No. 26 Boston College rounded out the top five with 176 points.
Tinsley ran the 5k women’s race in a time of 17:10, with Blackmon four seconds behind at 17:14. Jones finished at 17:28. True freshman Colleen Wetherbee was the next NC State runner to cross the finish line, however, in 77th place at 18:08. Anne Wheatly was 105th at 18:33 to round out the scoring for the Pack.
