CORAL GABLES, Fla. NC State opened ACC play with a tough 2-1 setback at Miami on Thursday night at Cobb Stadium.
NC State (5-2-2, 0-1-0 ACC) keeper Sydney Little had her career-best scoreless streak come to a halt at 337:25 when Lauren Singer scored her seventh goal of the season for Miami at the 39:01 mark of the first half for a 1-0 lead.
The Wolfpack seemed poised to take an early lead in the match with three solid shots with two on goal - in the opening four minutes, including two in a 30-second span. The best chance was a shot by Jessica O’Rourke that was cleared off the back line by a Hurricane defender.
In the second half, each club traded a couple shots, before high-scoring freshman Brittney Steinbruch tallied her 10th goal of the season for Miami in the 61st minute for a 2-0 lead.
The Wolfpack prevented a shutout, with a goal by O’Rourke in the 90th minute. She emerged from a scramble in front of the net and headed in a pass from Chantalle Dugas over a defender into the left post for her second marker of the year.
Miami edged N.C. State 15-14 in shots and used a strong defensive effort including a pair of key stops by its defense to overcome a 7-1 Wolfpack advantage in corner kicks.
Little was again strong in goal for the Pack coming up with seven saves in 90 minutes.
Lauren McAdam was forced to make five saves for Miami.
NC State falls to MIami for the first time in four career matches.
