WNBA veteran and former NC State star Chasity Melvin was traded last week to the Chicago Sky. In exchange, the Washington Mystics received guard Monique Currie.
Melvin has played in the WBNA for eight years, and had played three games in her fourth season for the Mystics. The 6-3 center has a career average of 11.0 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, with a 47.0 percent field goal percentage. She scored 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the Mystics’ season opening loss against the Connecticut Sun on May 19.
Melvin was drafted in the first round (11th overall) of the 1999 WNBA Draft by the Cleveland Rockers, and was selected by the Mystics in the Rockers dispersal draft in 2004. Melvin played one season in the ABL and was the 2nd pick in the 1998 ABL Draft. She helped lead NC State to its first-ever NCAA Final Four appearance in 1998 and led the team in scoring all four years she played for the Pack.
In the Mystics’ three games against the Sky last season, Melvin had two double doubles, with 20 points and 10 rebounds on July 9, 14 points, 2 blocked shots and a career-high 14 rebounds on July 16, and 14 points (8-for-8 from the field) and 8 rebounds on July 27.
“Chas gives us a big, experienced presence in the paint, which we really need,” said Sky head coach and GM Bo Overton. “This is a win for both teams. We have depth at the guard spot, with Stacey Dales and Dominique Canty both playing well. Monique is a talented player and the trade gives her the opportunity to play in her hometown.”
Melvin, who will wear number 44 for the Sky, scored five points and grabbed five rebounds off the bench in her debut.
In other news, the Minnesota Lynx announced last week the signing of former Wolfpack standout Tiffany Stansbury.
The 6-foot-3 free-agent forward/center played her first two collegiate seasons at Gulf Coast Community College, before finishing her college career at NC State, where she averaged 11.5 points and 6.8 rebounds in her final two seasons.
Stansbury was drafted by the Houston Comets in the third round (29th overall pick) of the 2006 WNBA Draft. Following her release in training camp, Stansbury signed with the Los Angeles Sparks in July 2006 and finished the season on their roster, averaging 1.5 points and 1.8 rebounds in four regular-season games.
In three preseason games with L.A. in 2007, she averaged 7.5 points and 5.5 rebounds before her release on the final day of camp.
Ironically, Stansbury made her debut with the Lynx the same night as Melvin did with the Sky. Stansbury scored six points and hauled in 13 rebounds in 25 minutes off the bench.
And in other news concerning former Wolfpacker’s in the WNBA, rookie center Gillian Goring has appeared in one game off the bench for Washington. Goring was selected No. 32 overall by the Mystics in April’s draft.
