RALEIGH, N.C. - The No. 27 NC State men's tennis team will hit the courts in the round of 16 for the first time in program history on Thursday, May 17, battling No. 11 Texas at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. First serve is slated for 9 a.m. The winner of Thursday's bout will battle the winner of third-seeded No. 4 Baylor and No. 17 Alabama on Saturday, May 19 at 9 a.m.
State and Texas have met just once before, with the Longhorns taking a 9-0 decision from the Pack on March 4, 1990.
NC State enters the round of 16 with a 22-9 record after dismissing archrival No. 6 North Carolina last Saturday, May 12, 4-0. It was the Pack's first win over the Tar Heels since 1988, and the first time in program history that the team had shut out its rival. Additionally, the win marked the highest opponent ever toppled by the Pack, and its first in the top-10.
This year's NCAA Tournament appearance is the second-straight for the Pack; the first time that feat has been accomplished in program history. It is State's fourth-ever showing in the Big Dance, having made the bracket in 1978, 1999, 2006 and 2007. Last season the Pack fell to Boise State, 4-3, in the opening round of play. Head coach Jon Choboy is the only coach in program history to guide the program to more than one NCAA Tournament bid.
State is 2-4 all-time in NCAA play, with both wins coming this postseason.
With 22 decisions so far this season, Choboy’s squad has notched the most single season victories in program history. NC State posts 12 wins against ranked teams so far this year with decisions over No. 64 Penn, No. 52 Louisville, No. 64 Fresno State, No. 42 Oklahoma, No. 42/43 William & Mary twice, No. 16 South Alabama, No. 35 Virginia Tech, No. 51 Maryland, No. 48 Georgia Tech, No. 33 Miami and No. 6 North Carolina.
Texas is 20-8 on the season after downing Boise State, 4-2, to advance to the round of 16. The Longhorns have three ranked singles players, No. 41 Dimitar Kutrovsky, No. 116 Milan Mihailovic, and No. 122 Luis Diaz Barriga. Kutrovsky and Josh Zavala also make up the No. 30 doubles tandem in the country.
The Longhorns are in the midst of its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance, and second-consecutive year in the round of 16.
