RALEIGH, N.C. - For the second time in the program's four-year history, NC State softball is headed to the Big Dance. The Wolfpack picked up the No. 15 overall seed, top's of all ACC squads, when the bracket was revealed live on ESPNEWS on Sunday, May 13. The Pack serves as the No. 1 seed at the Columbia Regional in Columbia, S.C., Friday, May 18 through Sunday, May 20. State will battle host South Carolina in the opening round. All games will be played at Beckham Field on the USC campus.
The Oregon Ducks and Penn State Nittany Lions will play at 4 p.m. on Friday before the Pack meets the Gamecocks at 7 p.m. The winners of the first two games will square off on Saturday, while the losers will play in an elimination game. A final game will be held on Sunday, with an additional contest being played afterwards if need be. All three rounds of the NCAA Tournament are double elimination.
"Our schedule all year long really helped us with our seeding," said head coach Lisa Navas. "We are very excited about our seeding and the opportunity to play close to home.
"We're disappointed in what happened at the ACC Championships, but we are excited about having another opportunity to play," said Navas.
Oregon stands as the No. 2 seed at the Columbia Regional. The Ducks will arrive at 42-17 overall, having finished seventh in the Pacific-10 while winning three of its last four games. Oregon didn't square off with any ACC squads all season.
Penn State takes the No. 3 regional slot with a 26-23 record. The Nittany Lions downed the Pack 5-3 in State's second game of the season on Feb. 10. PSU finished eighth in the Big 10 regular season standings and won its only other game against an ACC school, downing North Carolina 11-7 on Feb. 11.
Serving as the No. 4 seed on its home field, South Carolina enters the tournament with a 34-23 record. A member of the SEC, the Gamecocks went 1-3 this season against ACC squads, falling once each to Florida State and North Carolina, while splitting a two-game set with Virginia Tech. USC finished the regular season fourth in the SEC's eastern division.
The Wolfpack holds a 0-1 record all-time against South Carolina, and a 1-1 slate against Penn State. State and Oregon have never met on the diamond.
The Pack is 1-2 all-time in NCAA Tournament games, having made its first appearance last season.
Aside from NC State, four other ACC squads made the tournament. Virginia Tech grabbed the No. 16 overall seed and will play at Ohio State, while Georgia Tech travels to Florida. Florida State goes to Alabama and North Carolina heads to Tennessee.
