COLLEGE PARK, Md. No. 25 NC State extended its school-record winning streak to 16-straight with a 4-2 win over Maryland in the first of two games on Saturday, April 28. Abbie Sims (25-5) took the victory, while Meredith Nelles (16-9) was handed the loss. With the win, NC State moves to 40-16 (14-5 ACC), while the Terps fall to 29-20 (5-10 ACC).
State had won it's previous six outings by shut out, not allowing a run in the 40 innings previous to today's affair.
With just one more win, State will assure that it can finish no worse than second in the ACC regular season standings.
The Pack got on board in a hurry, scoring three runs in the first inning. Heather Gelbard sent the second pitch of the game back up the middle for a base hit and Blair Harkey followed by lining out to third on a bunt attempt. But Lindsay Ubrun’s throw back to first base sailed into the far corner of right field, allowing Gelbard to score from first.
State, however, wasn’t finished scoring. After Sims reached first on a walk, Allison Presnell flat-out demolished a Nelles pitch far beyond the wall in right-center, good for her 12th homer on the season.
Amber Jackson walked and quickly stole second to start the bottom of the first for Maryland. After fanning the next two batters, Sims walked Brittany Bessho and Jackson moved to third. Keri Lounge then sent an RBI single to short, allowing Jackson to score.
Sims helped out her own cause in the top of the third, launching a solo-blast in left-center that landed in the middle of the highway behind Taylor Stadium.
Maryland added a final run in the bottom of the sixth. Keri Lounge nailed a double to straightway center and then took third on a Lindsay Klein groundout before scoring on a passed ball.
NC State and Maryland will play game two shortly after 3 p.m.
