COLLEGE PARK, Md. No. 25 NC State used three home runs and a four-run third inning to top Maryland, 8-1, in the rubber match of a three-game set on Sunday, April 29. The decision, the Pack’s 17th in its last 18 games, clinches second-place in the ACC regular season standings, sending State to the ACC Championships as the No. 2 seed. With the win, NC State moves to 41-17 (15-6 ACC) on the season, while the Terrapins fall to 30-21 (6-11 ACC).
“I thought the kids played well,” said head coach Lisa Navas. “We hit well. A couple of miscues cost us the second game on Saturday, but I like the way the team rebounded today.”
In all the Pack pounded out 13 hits, with four players collecting more than one. Heather Gelbard went 2-for-3 with a run and three RBIs. Jen Chamberlin added two RBIs, including her 49th career blast.
"We’ll give them some time off this week during finals and then start to get ready for the ACC Championships,” said Navas. “It’s a whole new season at this point.”
Abbie Sims (26-5) tossed seven strong innings in securing the victory for the Wolfpack. Meredith Nelles (17-10) took the loss.
Gelbard got the Pack started with a solo-jack to lead off the game, giving NC State an early 1-0 advantage.
Maryland threatened in the bottom half of the inning, but couldn’t push any base runners across the plate. Jenny Belak reached first with one out on a base hit to third. Alex Schultz then laid a bunt towards short, taking first and pushing Belak to second. Sims battled back by fanning the next two batters, getting out of the jam.
The Pack had an opportunity to pad its lead in the top of the second, but failed to score. Miranda Ervin lined a single into left, and Krystal Hawkins took her place at first base. Hawkins then stole second before moving to third on a Megan Dalthorp groundout to short. Nelles responded by fanning Lisa Nentwig, but then walked Gelbard and nailed Claudia Cooper with a pitch. With the bases juiced and two outs, Chamberlin sent a grounder to short, and Amber Jackson touched second to end the inning.
The Terps tied things up in the bottom of the second, but it could’ve been much worse for State. Sarde Stewart led off with a bloop single into left, and Meghan Booth came on to run in her place. Lindsay Klein then moved Booth to third with a double to right field, and Lindsey Ubrun scored Booth with another bloop into shallow center.
The Pack got its first out of the inning when Jennifer Wellborn fouled out to Nentwig at first, but Sims then intentionally walked Jackson to load the bases. Belak followed with a hard grounder to Chamberlin, who made a solid play and tossed the ball to home where Klein was forced out. Sims then caught Schultz on strikes to send Maryland back into the field.
The Wolfpack came right back at the Terps in the top of the third, scoring four runs on four hits. Sims walked to start things off and Ashleigh Davis came on to run, immediately stealing second. Allison Presnell then blooped a single into shallow center, and both runners advanced on an errant relay throw by Schultz. Shanna Smith then singled to short, scoring Davis and moving Presnell to third. Smith then stole second before Ervin struck out. Dalthorp followed Ervin with a suicide-squeeze bunt to score Presnell and move Smith to third. Following a Nentwig pop up to third, Gelbard cleared the bases with a two-run triple to right, moving the score to 5-1.
Sims pounded out her second dinger of the series, crushing a solo-shot to right-center in the top of the fourth.
Harkey cemented her reputation as one of the top defensive center fielders in the ACC, robbing Belak of a guaranteed double with a diving grab to end the fourth.
State moved its lead to 7-1 with another run in the top of the fifth. Ervin grabbed her second hit of the game, a base hit into deep right, to start things off. Dalthorp followed by lining out to third, but Devon Williams’ throw back to first was wild, allowing Ervin to take second. Gelbard later reached on her second walk of the day, and Harkey loaded the bases with her first hit of the series, a single into left. Chamberlin followed with another walk, allowing Ervin to trot in.
Chamberlin mailed a third blast to center in the top of the seventh, running the lead to 8-1.
NC State will now take more than a week off as exams take place on campus. The Pack will return to action at the ACC Championships in Tallahassee, Fla., Thursday, May 10 through Sunday, May 13.
