TALLAHASSEE, Fla. Second-seeded NC State fell to seventh-seeded Boston College, 2-0, in the first round of the ACC Championships on Thursday, May 10. Britney Thompson (6-10) held the Pack to just six hits across seven innings, while Abbie Sims (26-6) took the loss. The decision puts State at 41-18 on the season, while the Eagles climb to 15-29.
Heather Gelbard led NC State with two hits while making her first start at second base on the season.
Boston College got the only two runs it needed in the top of the first. Amy Tunstall grabbed a base hit on a liner to third, and Jenna Macchi followed with a double down the left field line. Renee Ramos later blooped a two RBI single into shallow center.
The Pack gave BC a scare in the bottom of the fifth, but failed to push any runs across. Claudia Cooper popped up to third with two outs, but Taylor Peyton dropped the ball and Cooper took first. Beth Poore then came on to run at first, and Gelbard placed her second single of the day to left, but Jennifer Patterson struck out looking to end the Pack’s threat.
Jen Chamberlin singled through the left side to start the bottom of the sixth for State, but was left stranded as the next three batters failed to reach base.
Miranda Ervin put a leadoff base hit up the middle to start the bottom of the seventh, but Megan Dalthorp hit into a double play during the next at-bat. Cooper followed with a single up the middle, and Kristine Bechtholdt took her place at first, but Gelbard grounded out to short to end the ball game.
NC State will take on sixth-seeded Maryland later tonight in an elimination contest. Game time is slated for 8 p.m.
