Softball Completes Doubleheader Sweep of Charlotte, 8-0

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State Wolfpack softball team was able to complete the doubleheader sweep of

Charlotte on Tuesday at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex after an 8-0 win in five innings in the second game. With the win, the team improved to 29-16 on the season and are currently on a season-high five-game winning streak. Shaina Ervin got the win for the Pack and is now 9-10 for the year. She pitched five shutout innings, allowing only three hits and no walks while striking out six.

NC State got off to a quick start in the first inning with a three-run homerun from Jen Chamberlin. Heather Gelbard got the inning started off with a single to left and Blair Harkey followed with a single of her own. Chamberlin then blasted her 12^th homerun of the year over the centerfield wall to get the Pack rolling.

The Wolfpack kept the runs coming in the second inning as the lead increased to 5-0. Megan Dalthorp started off the inning with a single to left-center. With two outs in the inning Heather Gelbard singled to right field to advance Dalthorp to second. Blair Harkey then came up and slapped her first career triple to right field just past the diving effort of the right fielder. Harkey's hit drove in Dalthorp and Gelbard to make the score 5-0.

NC State extended their lead in the fourth inning with timely hitting. Laura Klem led off the inning and was hit by a pitch. With one out in the inning, Heather Gelbard hit an infield single that allowed Klem to advance to third. Chamberlin then delivered a two-out single to right field to earn her fourth RBI of the game and extend the lead to 6-0.

In the fifth inning the Wolfpack was able to add the two runs they needed in order for the game to be called due to the eight-run rule. Shanna Smith got the inning started with a double to left-center field. Pinch-hitter Ashleigh Davis then came up to the plate with one out and drove a single to right field to plate Smith from second. Laura Klem drew a walk, advancing

Davis to second, but

Davis was then thrown out at third on a fielder's choice by pinch hitter Kristine Bechtholdt. Heather Gelbard then walked to load the bases for pinch hitter Miranda Ervin. Ervin hit a hard grounder to short, but the 49ers' second baseman dropped the ball at second allowing Klem to score for the final 8-0 margin.

The Wolfpack will be in action again on Thursday, April 12^th as they travel to UNC Greensboro for a doubleheader.
