CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 25 NC State shutout Villanova, 7-0, in the first of two games on the day at the USF adidas Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., on Thursday, March 8. Shaina Ervin (6-3) surrounded just four hits while securing her sixth victory of the season, as the Pack offense provided nine hits, two of which were home runs. Nicci Ward (3-2) took the loss. With the win the Pack moves to 15-6 (2-1 ACC) on the season, while the Wildcats slide to 8-5.
NC State’s offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on six hits. Abbie Sims got things started by crushing a Ward pitch over the fence in right-center to put the Pack up 1-0. Shanna Smith followed with a liner up the middle and stole second before Allison Presnell sent a two-run blast out of the park in center field. At that point the Wildcats replaced Ward with Kat Walsh.
Following a Megan Dalthorp lineout, Laura Klem recorded a bunt single then stole second. Klem then advanced to third as Hawkins dropped a bunt single of her own towards second. Hawkins then stole second before Blair Harkey walked to load the bases. Chamberlin then singled to right, scoring Klem and Hawkins and increasing the lead to 5-0.
Head coach Lisa Navas made some defensive adjustments in the top of the fifth, replacing Sims with Ashleigh Davis and putting her in left, while moving Hawkins to right and placing Dalthrop in the designated player spot. Villanova was then retired in order, one-two-three.
Cassie Koenig started the top of the sixth with a single through the left side, extending her hitting steak to 10 games, but the Wildcats failed to put any runs on the scoreboard.
State added two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth to pad its lead. Klem walked and moved to second on a bunt single from Hawkins, before both runners moved up a bag on a Harkey groundout to first. Chamberlin followed with another groundout, scoring Klem. Hawkins then scored when Miranda Ervin singled up the middle.
NC State will play its second game of the day against Mercer at 1 p.m.
