CLEARWATER, Fla. – No. 25 NC State shut out its third opponent in as many games with a 4-0 win over Long Island in the first of two games on the day at the USF adidas Invitational in Clearwater, Fla., on Friday, March 9. Abbie Sims (9-3) allowed just three hits while striking out seven batters. Jenny Giles (3-4) took the loss. With the win, NC State moves to 17-6 (2-1 ACC) on the season, while the Blackbirds fall to 4-9.
Sims helped herself out by giving the Pack a 2-0 cushion in the bottom of the first. Blair Harkey started things off with a single up the middle, and then moved to second when Jen Chamberlin walked. Two at-bats later Sims crushed a double into left center and advanced to third on the throw as Harkey and Chamberlin both crossed the plate.
The Blackbirds put its leadoff hitter on base in the top of the second as Jessie DePippo singled. Following a sacrifice bunt, Sims loaded the bases by walking Renae Beauchman and Holly Erwin. But Mariesha Marker followed with a grounder to short and Shanna Smith sent the ball to the plate for Miranda Ervin to apply the tag on Amanda Devan, running for DePippo, and record the second out. Sims then fanned Brynn Lewis to get out of the jam.
The Pack added a run to its lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-out rally. Allison Presnell doubled to center and scored on a single to left from Megan Dalthorp. Laura Klem followed with a single through the right side, but Heather Gelbard popped up to second to end the inning.
NC State padded its lead again in the bottom of the fifth. Chamberlin doubled down the left field line and Krystal Hawkins came on to run in her place. Sims then singled to short, moving Hawkins to third. Hawkins didn’t stop there, however, scoring as Celina Castillo let the ball dribble into the outfield from short.
NC State will return to the field against Chattanooga at 1 p.m.
