No. 36 Women's Tennis Defeats Winthrop, 6-1

Raleigh, N.C. The No. 36 NC State women’s tennis team defeated Winthrop, 6-1, on Sunday, March 4, at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh, N.C. The Wolfpack won all three doubles matches before going on to win five singles bouts. With the win, the red and white improves to 8-2, as the Eagles fall to 0-9 on the season.
The Pack collected the doubles point for an early lead after overwhelming all three of Winthrop’s doubles tandems. Freshman Kate Green and junior Julia Roach quickly finished off Ana Paula Novaes and Paula Pereira, 8-1, at No. 1, and sophomores Alejandra Guerra and Neils Barringer overpowered Larisa Bekmetova and Yelina Fadina, 8-2, at No. 3. Freshmen Berkeley Brock and Catherine Grotz fended off a comeback and captured the win over Antoniya Bagaric and Patricia Coimbra, 8-6, at No. 2.
Guerra grabbed NC State’s first singles win by taking down Yelina Fadina, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 4, and a few minutes later, Brock defeated Novaes, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 1.
Roach improved to an 8-0 singles record and secured the win for the Pack with a solid victory over Bagaric, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 3. Grotz fell to Coimbra, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 2, and Green downed Pereira, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 5.
After splitting the first two sets, Barringer pulled ahead in the third-set tiebreak to defeat Bekmetova, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5), at No. 6.
The red and white will next head to Tallahassee, Fl. on March 9. The Pack will be taking on the Florida State Seminoles at 3 p.m.
