BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 24 NC State took the second game of a doubleheader from No. 25 Virginia Tech, 2-1, on Saturday, March 31, in Blacksburg, Va. The Pack pounded out six hits while capitalizing on three Hokie errors to even the ACC series. With the win, NC State moves to 24-15 (4-4 ACC) on the year, while Virginia Tech falls to 27-11 (5-3 ACC). Abbie Sims (15-5) collected the win, allowing just two hits while fanning seven batters. Karie Morrison (1-1) took the loss.
Three hits put the Pack up in the top of the third. Laura Klem singled to right, and then moved to second on a Heather Gelbard groundout. Blair Harkey followed with a bloop single into center, and Jen Chamberlin brought Klem across the plate with an RBI single into right.
NC State threatened to blow the game wide open in the top of the fourth, but failed to do any damange. Miranda Ervin drew a one-out walk and was replaced on the basepath by Krystal Hawkins. Megan Dalthorp then beat out an infield single, moving Hawkins to second. Gelbard followed by reaching first on an error to load the bases with two outs, but Claudia Cooper grounded out back to the circle.
All-American hurler Angela Tincher, who collected the win in the first meeting between the two teams earlier in the day, took over from the circle for the Hokies in the top of the fifth. Kelsey Hoffmann also entered the game behind home plate.
Chamberlin welcomed Tincher by knocking her first pitch out of the park. The solo-shot, Chamberlin’s 45th career blast, put the Pack up 2-0. The Wolfpack slugger now stands just one dinger shy of tying the ACC record for career home runs.
The Hokies didn’t go down easy, however, scoring one run and giving the Pack a serious scare in its last at-bat. Sims issued two walks to start the bottom of the seventh, then surrendered her first hit of the game, an infield single to Jessica Everhart, to load the bases. Sims the struck out Whitney Davis, but Hoffman singled to right, scoring one run. Walker then went down looking and Callie Rhodes grounded out to short to end play.
NC State and Virginia Tech will wrap up the series tomorrow, Sunday, April 1, at 1 p.m.
