BLACKSBURG, Va. – No. 24 NC State fell to No. 25 Virginia Tech, 2-0, on Saturday, March 31, in Blacksburg, Va., in the first of two games on the day. The Hokies put two runs on the board in the bottom of the fifth, while All-American hurler Angela Tincher (21-3) kept the Pack from scoring. Shaina Ervin (7-9) collected the loss despite giving up three hits. With the loss, NC State moves to 23-15 (3-4 ACC) on the year, while Virginia Tech climbs to 27-10 (5-2 ACC).
The Pack’s five hits were the most allowed by Tincher all season. Her previous high was four in a loss Ohio State on March 10. Tincher’s nine strikeouts also mark a season-low for her.
Megan Dalthorp and Kristine Bechtholdt placed back-to-back singles with two down in the top of the fifth, but Tincher got Heather Gelbard to fly into shallow center for the third out.
With runners on second and third with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Kelsey Hoffman singled into left field, bringing in two runs, and moving to second when Dalthorp bobbled the ball in the outfield. Anna Zitt followed with a single into right, but Abbie Sims gunned down Hoffman as she attempted to score with a perfect throw to Jennifer Patterson behind the plate.
Jen Chamerblin grabbed her second base hit of the day with a one-out single into left in the top of the sixth. But Sims then lined out to short, and Chamberlin, who was nearly halfway to second base, was thrown out at first.
NC State and Virginia Tech will play the second game of the day at 2 p.m.
