RALEIGH, N.C. – Allison Presnell crushed two home runs, including a game-ending grand slam, to lift No. 24 NC State past East Carolina, 12-2, on Wednesday, March 28, in the first of two games on the day at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex. The Pack put up 11 hits, including three homers and three doubles. With the win, NC State moves to 23-13 (3-3 ACC) on the season, while ECU drops to 25-11.
Presnell’s six RBIs set a new school record for RBIs in a single game. She currently leads the team in home runs (8) and RBIs (31).
East Carolina got off to an early 2-0 lead as the second and third batters of the game, Erin St. Ledger and Jessica Johnson, hit back-to-back solo home runs into left field.
The Pirates lead didn’t last long, however, as the Pack put four runs on the board in the bottom of the second. Shanna Smith hit a ground-rule double to center with one out, and then moved to third on a fly ball to center by Miranda Ervin. Megan Dalthorp followed with another ground-rule double to center, bringing Smith across the plate. Keli Harrell then put Laura Klem on first with a walk before giving up a line drive to Heather Gelbard that escaped the yard in left-center for a three-run homer, putting State up 4-2.
Presnell supplied the Pack with two more runs in the bottom of the third on a dinger to left field. When Smith followed with a base hit into left, ECU replaced Harrell with Brooke Swann in the circle. Swann promptly retired the next two batters to get the Pirates out of the inning.
Sims took a one-out walk in the bottom of the fifth and was replaced at first by Krystal Hawkins. Hawkins quickly stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Presnell. After walking on four-straight pitches, Smith stole second, allowing Hawkins to score by stealing home.
East Carolina had its first two batters reach base in the top of the sixth, but failed to do any damage. St. Ledger singled into left and Johnson walked to get things started, but Sims fanned pinch-hitter Jessica Potter and Stacey Andrews before getting Sarah Bibee to ground out.
Dalthorp lead off the bottom of the sixth with her second ground-rule double of the game into left, and then moved to third on a base hit into shallow right by Kristine Bechtholdt. Gelbard then lined a single into left, scoring Dalthorp and pushing Klem to third. Following a Sims walk, Presnell emptied the bases with her second homer of the day, a grand slam into left field, moving the score to 12-2 and ending play.
Sims (14-4) settled down after the first inning, allowing just five total hits while collecting six strikeouts. Harrell (14-6) picked up the loss.
NC State and East Carolina will play the second game of today’s doubleheader at 5:15 p.m.
