No. 44 NC State women's tennis (9-6, 0-4 ACC) lost another close ACC match in a 4-3 heartbreaker to No. 64 Virginia on Friday night in Charlottesville, Va. Despite jumping on top early by winning the doubles point, the Pack snagged only two of the singles matches and lost three of the matches in three sets.
Guerra and Petrovic won at No. 1 doubles, 8-5, and Roach and Green took No. 2 doubles, 9-7, to secure the point.
After Catherine Grotz lost at No. 2 singles, Berkeley Brock gave the Wolfpack a 2-1 lead at No. 3 with a 6-4, 7-6 (3) win.
The Cavaliers tied the score at 2-2 with a win at No. 1 singles in three sets. Jennifer Stevens won the match over the Pack's Daria Petrovic, 6-0, 3-6, 6-4.
Amanda Rales stopped Kate Green's bid to win her 11th match of the season as Green fell 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 for just her second loss of the season at No. 5 and No. 6 combined.
Julia Roach tied the match at 3-3 with her team-leading 11th win of the season, 7-6 (5), 7-5 at No. 5 singles.
The match came down to the Pack's Alejandra Guerra at No. 4 singles, and the sophomore lost 7-5 in the third set as the Cavs squeaked out the win.
NC State will now travel straight to Blacksburg, Va., to take on the No. 69 Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday.
