GREENSBORO, N.C. – NC State’s Nick Cavaday has been named this week’s Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Tennis Player of the Week. The junior receives his second league recognition of 2007 after helping the 52nd-ranked Wolfpack earn victories over two ranked opponents on the road last week.
Currently ranked No. 35 nationally in singles by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Cavaday topped two ranked opponents at No. 1 singles and picked up a pair of wins in doubles with partner William Noblitt.
Against 64th-ranked Fresno State last Friday, Cavaday secured a 6-4, 6-4 win against No. 59 Jakub Cech in singles action and paired with Noblitt to take down the Bulldogs’ top doubles tandem of Cech and Mirko Zapletal, 8-6. The Pack went on to win the match, 5-2, and became the first team in over a year to defeat Fresno State at home.
The junior from London, England, wrapped up the week with two more wins as the Pack notched a 5-2 victory over No. 42 Oklahoma and handed the Sooners their first loss of the season. In singles, he edged No. 111 Vaclav Kucera by 7-6 (3), 7-5 at the top flight for his fourth win over a ranked opponent this season. Earlier in the day, he teamed with Noblitt to defeat the No. 42 doubles duo of Federico Chavarria and Rob McKenzie, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles.
The Wolfpack will be back in action this weekend, competing in the Blue/Gray National Invitational. The four-day tournament is hosted by the University of South Alabama in Montgomery, Ala.
